Lightning Protection Works, Welsh Institute of Sport

Darlington-based specialist maintenance company, Stone Technical Services, has recently completed significant projects for three iconic buildings in Wales and London.

Stone was engaged to carry out lightning protection works at the Small World Theatre in Cardigan, West Wales, the Welsh Institute of Sport in Cardiff and Selfridges on Oxford Street in London in contracts totalling in the region of £30,000.

The Small World Theatre is a unique, eco-friendly building featuring grey air source heat pumps and willow wattle walls. The hexagonal building is three storeys high and required a lightning protection system which Stone installed in keeping with the style of the structure.

The Welsh Institute of Sport recently underwent roofing, renovation and extension work. The state-of-the-art building provides a range of indoor and outdoor facilities and again, because of its height, required a lightning protection system.

And the famous flagship branch of Selfridges in London is currently undergoing a period of refurbishment. Stone’s south east office, based in Pinner, is working alongside leading building restoration, conservation and stonemasonry experts, Stonewest, to install an appropriate lightning protection system to the high profile building on Oxford Street.

As well as lightning conductor installation, Stone specialises in high level maintenance, safety systems, steeplejacks and also works in the heritage and conservation fields on specialist high level repairs and maintenance.

Stone Technical Services’ employs 18 people with plans to create a further 3 jobs in the next year. The company counts leading names such as BASF, Cummins in Darlington, English Heritage, the National Trust, St Paul’s Cathedral and councils across the UK as its clients.

Brothers Dave and Grahame Stone established the company in 1998. Dave commented: “The range of work we get asked to carry out is phenomenal and includes everything from industrial to heritage buildings and structures. Because we have this combined expertise our services are in constant demand. Working on buildings such as the fabulous Small World Theatre, the Welsh Institute of Sport and Selfridges reinforces the skills of our highly-experienced workforce and is helping to expand our Darlington team and open new offices, such as the London base.”
