St. Stephens & West Church - Broughty Ferry

On Thursday 27th May the historic spire of the A - listed Church took the full force of a violent lightning strike, the blast and huge rumble of thunder was heard throughout Broughty Ferry, Dundee and North Fife. The spire sustained extensive damage with roof tiles, timber and masonry raining to the ground. The initial assessment by the City Engineer has determined that the structure of the spire is still sound – loose tiles and bits of masonry have been taken off and the church site has been cordoned off with fencing and has been designated a danger zone for the time being.

Ron Raffan the Church’s assistant fabric convenor is overseeing the whole affair – Further inspection of the spire will be done by experts on Tuesday after the bank holiday weekend, to see whether the spire can be repaired or whether it may have to be demolished. The interim moderator the Rev Jim Roy said he is hopeful that the congregation may be able to use the Church Hall to hold services as soon as possible.

The Congregation of St Luke’s and Queen Street Church have invited the St Stephen’s and West congregation to their service on Sunday 30th May – after which there will be a special meeting of St Stephen’s and West members regarding the situation. More details regarding the future of the Church Steeple and all future Church Services will be intimated on the Website as soon as possible.
