Darlington company climbs higher for new business

Stone Technical Services has completed a series of new contracts related to the maintenance and repair of factory, high-level and industrial sites.

Having already completed various projects at the Royal Courts of Justice throughout 2010, Stone's restoration experts have replaced a high level gantry on the historic building on The Strand in London.

As well as high level restoration and maintenance on historic buildings, Stone also specialises in inspections on steel, brick and concrete chimneys all over the UK to check for maintenance problems such as carbonisation, shrinkage, fissures, cracks and accelerated corrosion of the reinforcement.

The team has recently been working in Oxfordshire carrying out inspections for the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust. Firstly, Stone used its specialist safety equipment to inspect the 31 meter tall concrete chimney at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Headington near Oxford, the main accident and emergency site for the Oxfordshire area, which dates back to the early 1900s.

Also for the Trust, Stone completed a further inspection of a 15 metre steel chimney on the Churchill Hospital, near Oxford.

And still in Oxfordshire, at Woodford Mill, an exclusive residential area, Stone's team carried out a further inspection of a 31.5 meter tall brick-built, former mill chimney. Brick chimney stacks are no longer as common but, where in existence, require careful inspection to maintain overall structural stability. External brickwork needs to be regularly examined to determine any movement to bed joints, cracking, fissures and general deterioration of mortar.

Finally, back in the North East, Stone completed a project for RFMD in Newton Aycliffe to paint 14 steel chimneys for the company, which specialises in the design and manufacture of semi-conductor components.

Stone Technical Services employs a team of 28 at its headquarters in Darlington and also its sites in central London, Cheshire and Middlesex. The company is a leader in the fields of all aspects of high level maintenance, lightning conductor installation and steeplejack services as well as restoration and masonry refurbishment projects on churches, museums, clock towers, castles, spires and historic buildings.

The company works all over the UK on a variety of high profile buildings such as St Paul's Cathedral and Selfridges in London and for organisations such as English Heritage and the National Trust as well as for well known industrial clients such as INEOS Plant Utilities and Teesside Power Station.

Managing director, Dave Stone said: "Working at height demands a huge amount of skill and very thorough knowledge of complex safety procedures. Furthermore, working on chimneys requires even more intense training. Our team has all of these skills and vast experience in these difficult areas hence we're able to secure a real variety of contracts up and down the country which will allow us to grow in 2011."
